V Infiorata di Olivarella. Feast of flowers dedicated to the Sicilian poet Bartolo Cataffi from Bacellona Pozzo di Grotto, organised by the association Olivarella Citta Futura. The categories and highlights will be under others:
Mediterranea: The Mediterranean competition, a selection of 7 films produced in the Mediterranean region will compete for the Golden Tauro for Best Film. The award will be presented at the Greek Theater on June 21. Other prizes include best director, best performance and best technical work. This year Turkish cinema will take centerstage at the Taormina Film Festival. Director Deborah Young has assembled a seven-title Mediterranean competition including Turkish first-timer Seyfi Teoman's Summer Book, which unspooled in Berlin; the world preem of Egyptian helmer Ibrahim El Batout's sophomore feature Eye of the Sun; and Slovenian thesp-helmer Branko Djuric's Tractor, Love and RocknRoll, set in the Communist-era 1960s.
Beyond the Mediterranean: A selection of 7 films produced in countries outside the Mediterranean region will be screened. These films will compete for the Audience Award and a cash prize. Beyond the Mediterranean section will include Spanish helmer Gerardo Olivares 14 Kilometros, about young Africans trying to cross the border from Morocco into Spain; Mike Figgis Love Live Long, which unspooled in Tribeca; and Irish helmer Mary McGuckian's test-tube baby satire Inconceivable, toplining Andie MacDowell.
Grand cinema: Toby Dammit, the middle episode of Spirits of the Dead directed by Federico Fellini and restored by director of photography Giuseppe Rotunno, will be one of the highlights of the Taormina Film Fest. Among the more mainstream pics unspooling in Taormina's spectacular ancient Greek theater are a freshly restored print of The Godfather, partly shot near Taormina; David Mamet's martial arts pic Red Belt; and Keanu Reeves cop actioner Street Kings.
Jury: Turkish-born Italian helmer Ferzan Ozpetek will head the jury, which also includes Sarajevo Film Festival director Mirsad Purivatra and Portuguese producer Paulo Branco.
Master Class: New Yorker film crtitic Anthony Lane, U.S. helmer Paul Schrader and Turkish/Teutonic helmer Fatih Akin will hold master classes.
